Someone To Light Up My Life

He's My Peace lyrics by Aisha Brooks-Lytle, music by Dianne Thompson

This is one of the first songs I wrote with Dianne Thompson as I began to write in a more Jazz influenced style. She would begin to play on the keyboard and BAM~ there would be a song. Thanks again Dianne for your ministry, inspiration and friendship.

Verse 1
Sometimes I need a place where I can hide away
And his spirit consoles me
Takes away my fears
Dries up all my tears
Just to let me know that
He is my Peace

When I don't know how to pray or the words get in the way
I have his light to guide me
Tells me who I am full
Full and complete in him
And I know his power is inside of me

Bridge
I wait on his everlasting arms to rescue me
And I watched him care for me when I could not stand on my own
And when I needed him most he's always there each time I call

Verse 2
No matter how I feel
I know my Jesus will see me through this journey
So I will testify, till the very day I die
That he's my hope my life, my joy, and my peace

So Much lyrics by Aisha Brooks-Lytle, music by Aisha and Carl Brooks-Lytle

This is just a love song to Jesus. I can remember coming up with the lyrics sitting at a piano in my Rachel's front room. It pretty amazing to hear it with the full band.

Verse 1
Your love is so wonderful
Your love is so marvelous
Your love is so real
How could I ever doubt your love

Your word is so powerful
Your word is so life so beautiful
Your word has changed me
I'll never be the same again

Bridge
And whenever I stray, you are always there to guide me home
And when sadness awaits, I can feel your love flow through my soul

Verse 2
You're more than strength and life to me
You're something no one could ever be
More than my best friend
You are my Lord and King of kings

As The Deer by Martin Nystrom
I love praise and worship songs. I grew up listening to the Marantha singers praise records. My mom had every one of their albums. This arrangement brings back memories of my childhood and makes me think of my amazing life as youth director at Wayne Presbyterian Church.

Your Grace lyrics by Aisha Brooks-Lytle, music by Aisha and Carl Brooks-Lytle

This is my own attempt at writing a Praise song. I envision it to be one of those meditative songs that you listen to while you're writing a letter, relaxing in your living room, or as you watch the ocean.

Your grace invites me
To sing of Joy and harmony

Your love is refreshing
It brings life to me and all I see

Your mercy surrounds me
Day and night I know
It watches me

Bridge
When I need you you're always there
In times of trouble you are a friend
I want to see you forever more

Weight of the World lyrics by Aisha Brooks-Lytle, arrangement by Aisha and Carl Brooks-Lytle

This song is special to me for two reasons. The first is that it comes from the chords of an amazing standard I learned in school entitled Autumn. I have always loved the structure of the song. I wrote this song after I came back from a mission trip to Spartanburg, South Carolina. We stayed at a homeless shelter to work and serve along side of the homeless. One evening I was having a conversation with a young native American girl about all the problems she faced. I was overwhelmed with the trappings of this society, the cycles of poverty, and was trying to reconcile the promises of hope that Jesus offers. I wrote this song for her and all those who wait in limbo for liberation of oppressive systems in our world. Prayerfully, God's people will continue to care for the 'least of these' in mighty ways so that they won't have to wait much longer.

When the weight of the world is off my shoulders
Its like the wind asking me if I would like to dance
When the weight of this world
Is off my shoulders
I realize that I'm surrounded with love

And whenever I'm afraid
I think of the promises for me
And whenever I'm alone
I think of his goodness and mercy
And when I can't see he's always watching
And though times are sad
I look for the day

When the weight of the world this off my shoulders
Its like the wind running after me
Asking me if I would like to dance

Swinging Shepherd Blues by Moe Kauffman
The first time I heard this was on an Ella Fitzgerald CD. Seeing how I’m a Christian, and there is shepherd language used in the Bible, I thought it was kind of cool to think of Jesus as my hip shepherd, leading and guiding and loving crazy sheep!

Because I Told You So by Jonatha Brooke, arrangement by Aisha and Carl Brooks-Lytle
Anyone who really knows me, knows that I love Jonatha Brooke. This singer/ songwriter has been an inspiration to my musical journey since 1996. One of her songs 'Always' (Grace & Gravity, The Story) had a huge impact on me. (That's a WHOLE other story.) This song can be found on her LIVE CD or on 10 cent wings. When I first heard this song, I thought about the ways we try to convince people that we want to care for them and love them in relationships. Then, I thought about the ways Jesus wants me to realize how much I am loved simply by his words of assurance. It's a reminder for me to hold strong to God's message of love and to live my life believing that I AM fully loved and cared for by God.

His Ways lyrics by Aisha Brooks-Lytle, music by Jon Frost

What a wonderful song! Carl and I performed this on our wedding day with the help of Jon Frost. (OK FROST IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING GUITAR PLAYERS I KNOW .. WATCH OUT FOR THIS ONE!) Jon and I were on a mission trip to Atlanta and during the prayer time he would play these chords. I kept hearing this melody in my head and told him that I would like to write a song with him. We had it written in time for the wedding and decided to use it. This song is a reminder of the strengths and gifts that flow out of Christian community.

His ways are not like my ways
He is all that I've ever needed

His peace is not like my peace
It is wider than the deepest sea

His love is not like my love
It is more than I've ever dreamed

When I don't understand his ways
He leads me beside the still waters
When I can't make sense of life
He restores my soul
When I'm faced with fear and doubt,
He guides me in his ways

Your ways are not like our ways
You are all that we'll ever need

Someone To Light Up My Life by Antonio Carlos Jobim, English lyrics by Gene Lees,
arrangement by Aisha and Carl Brooks-Lytle

Ah, the world of Antonio Carlos Jobim. His music is amazing and warms the hearts of many. I first heard song while I was in undergrad and purchased a Tribute to Jobim CD by Herbie Hancock and friends. The rendition of this song is priceless and sung in Portugese. This is song isn't meant to be a Christian version of the original. Our ending to this song happened under spirit led improvisation and that is the way we perform the song whenever we play it. I think that we should always ask the question of who or what illuminates our lives. If I say that it is Christ who brings joy, hope, and light to my existence, then I need to make sure I give him the room to do so
